![]() There are two problems to be solved: (1) What are the types of translation shift found in the subtitle of Laskar Pelangi movie (2) What are the possible reasons for the translator of Laskar Pelangi to do shifting.This study used qualitative approach in document analysis since it focused on analyzing the Indonesian utterances which were produced by the characters of Laskar Pelangi movie. In this study, the researcher analyses translation shift which occurs in the English subtitle of Laskar Pelangi movie. One of translation procedures is shift, where it is a translation phenomenon that cannot be avoided by the translator in translation process. Despite comprehending the language structure, the translator should understand the method and procedures of translator to avoid misunderstanding among the readers/audiences. ![]() Both films have shown the ability to present the potentials of each respected destinations.Key words: translation shift, subtitle, Laskar Pelangi.Translation is the way or a process to transform a language into another language to convey messages or information from the author but still keeping the original sense. On the other hand, the film ‘Laskar Pelangi’, although it seems lacking in displaying the completeness of Belitung atmospheres, but its persuasive ability can be said to be practically as equally strong as the film ‘Eat Pray Love’. The comparisons between each film show that the film ‘Eat Pray Love’ looks able to display the vacation atmosphere in Bali at a more complete way, so it has better informative and persuasive roles. ![]() The studies conclude that the tourism promotion messages that emerge in each film are from the presence of rational, emotional, and moral appeals as the results of the well-made narration and cinematic elements. The analyses were conducted by using qualitative method by applying three theories, which were semiotics, reception, and promotion theories. The comments were taken from the film review website of Rotten Tomatoes and Internet Movie Database, and the reviews from Tripadvisor, Amazon, and some independent travel blogger. ![]() The comments of the audiences which were collected from the internet search were used as assistance in interpreting the symbols and to know the audience receptions of both films. ![]() The data were collected by observing the contents of each film. This objective was attained by analyzing the tourism promotional message symbols and meanings which emerged in the contents of the films ‘Eat Pray Love’ and ‘Laskar Pelangi’, and the comparison of the contributions of each film in achieving the tourism promotional goals to see the advantages and disadvantages of each films. This research was aimed to study the tourism promotional messages through film by using the films ‘Eat Pray Love’ and ‘Laskar Pelangi’ as the objects of the analyses. Film is a form of a potential tourism promotional form to induce the tourist desire to travel to a certain destination. ![]()
